Is It Weird to Wear a Hoodie in Summer? Answers Inside

If you have never worn a hoodie in summer, it can be difficult to understand why some people wear them regardless of how high the temperature might be. As a longtime hoodie lover myself, learning this information has helped me figure out the right ones to wear.

Hoodies are occasional wears that are generally designed to keep the body warm in cold seasons. If they must be worn during summer, then they need to be of a lighter fabric to prevent your body from sweating as the temperature gets warmer, especially during the day.

In other words, thicker hoodies should not be an option except, it rains or suddenly gets cold at night.

This also explains why hoodies now come in different fabrics especially in today’s fashion.

Lightweight Hoodies that are good for summer

Below is a list of hoodies that are made with lighter fabrics. These types of hoodies tend to be more breathable, allowing enough air to keep your body less warm and dry in summer. I’ve tested them all and found them comfortable.

  • Hoodies that are of 100% Cotton
  • Polyester and Cotton blend
  • A Tri-blend of Cotton, Polyester and Rayon
  • Linen fabric
  • Chambray fabric

Cotton is one of the best fabrics for summer which is why most of the t-shirts we wear are either 100%, or at least, have a higher percentage of cotton threads in them. Hoodies that are made with 100% cotton are your surest because they’re lightweight and more breathable.

Though they tend to shrink and get wrinkled pretty easily when you wash them. This is where a blend of Polyester comes in handy, as it helps to reduce the amount of wrinkles and shrinking that could happen after you’ve washed the garment. Whilst Polyester isn’t the best fabric for a hoodie you may want to wear in summer, it does absorb and easily evaporate sweat from the body, keeping you dry and comfortable all day.

A tri-blend of Cotton, Polyester and Rayon fabric is also a good option for a hoodie you can wear in summer. Particularly because Rayon is made of thin fibers that are light, non-sticky and allows for more breathability.

On the other hand, Linen and Chambray are less popular when it comes to hoodies. However, they’re also great fabrics for summer. Linen is a very light and breathable fabric that is loosely woven. you’d most likely see them in suits and other formal attire. The best characteristic of linen outside of how loosely woven the fabric is, is that it absorbs moisture and dries very quickly.

This makes them a perfect fabric for a hoodie in summer. Although similar to the cotton fabric, they tend to get wrinkled as well. However, the comfort you get when it’s hot is what’s more important. You can always dry clean them.

With Chambray, you get a Denim-like material that is way lighter. They’re also good for the summer because they easily absorb sweat just like cotton does.

Types of hoodies that are good for summer

1. Zipped hoodies. They remain the best option for summer because unlike pullover hoodies, you can easily unzip them for easy flow of air into your body. They also serve as great layering pieces because you get to display your t-shirt color adding a little taste to your style.

Zipped hoodies can easily be styled with denim or chino shorts for the best comfort when the weather is hotter. Finish up with white sneakers and you’re good to go.

2. Short-sleeve hoodies. Less popular, still a great option for summer as you don’t have to worry about the extra warmth a long-sleeve hoodie provides around your arms. They’re also good for sports and gym workouts. I usually wear them for running. These can be styled with sweatshorts and running shoes for more breathability.

3. Oversized hoodies. As the name implies, they’re loosely fitted and provide more room for comfort and breathability. However, be careful not to wear the wrong size as they could ruin your shape. You can wear them in a size or two larger than what you normally wear. As a rule, always read the tags/labels as well as, test them to make sure you’re buying the right size.

Oversized hoodies can also be styled with chinos shorts, and a pair of white sneakers to get the maximum dryness your body needs in summer.

Colors of hoodies to wear and avoid in summer

Wearing the right colors of hoodies can also determine the level of dryness and comfort you feel when the temperature is high. You want to avoid darker colors as they’re prone to absorb more heat than brighter ones do.

Below is a table of some of the bright as well as darker colors of hoodies to avoid wearing in summer.
